two thousand and what?!

Two thousand and eight? It's almost here and as usual I'm shocked. I've never been one to reflect much at this time of year but this year I'm feeling nostalgic, empowered and hopeful.

It's been a good year.

Yes, I have had my individual struggles and we've had our struggles as a family. But my family - Chad, Lars and Jette - are so awesome and loving make everything worthwhile.

It has been an amazing year watching my babies grow. Lars turned 3 in September and Jette turned 1 in August. They are starting to get along more like I imagined siblings would at this age which is making life a lot easier around our house these days. Jette has lots of new words and is looking so grown up. Lars is so kind and thoughtful and hilarous but has a definite stubborn 3 year old side. Chad, who is a talented artist and an amazing daddy, is starting to dive back into drawing after years of putting it on the back burner. This makes me so happy. I can't wait to see what 2008 brings for all of my family.

It has also been a fun year of vacations and friends. I feel so lucky that I was able to travel and spend time with family and friends this year. Some of the highlights were vacationing in Denver with my BFF Jessi and spending a long weekend in Florida with my mother-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law. I also got to spend some time with Jessi and her baby Max when they visited in November. It was so fun to see him interact with my kids. It was hard to see them go!

And finally it's been an awesome year for Space Oddities. I looked back at the small goals I made for 2007 - which included doing 2 craft shows, 100 sales on my etsy site, and starting to do consignment. I am thrilled to say that I met and exceeded those goals by a lot. I admit that I made small, attainable goals because I knew that I would be overwhelmed if I made ridiculous ones. I have a full time job, 2 small children, and a husband who works the shifts opposite mine. So to try to do too much is exhausting. But my tiny business is part of what keeps me going. I am totally passionate about making the things I make and because of that I know that I will only continue to build my business.

This year I made over 230 sales on my etsy site. I participated in several awesome craft events including Renegade Craft in Chicago, 3 High Noon Craftacular events in Madison, the first WIST trunk show, and even a sci-fi convention (Geek-kon.) I was also lucky enough to be part of the Etsy Trashion Trunk show at etsylabs in Brooklyn. I started selling my wares at a local boutique (Glitter Workshop) and have had inquires about more consignment and wholesale opportunities. I got to appear on live TV to promote a local craft show and talk about my work. I bought a gocco and started collaborating with my husband to make fun designs for shirts, totes and notecards. I met some super nice local crafters through shows and through etsy. I also started this blog. Thanks to every single person who has supported me this year - from etsy sales to friendly hellos at craft shows to blog comments - and everything inbetween.

So all of this being said. I am finished reflecting and ready for a new year. This year I plan to think big. I know that I can only do so much, but I also know that I'm not getting any younger. If I want to make my crafting a full time gig some day I need to take it as seriously as I can. This year I want to find balance between my day job, my family and my crafting as much as that is possible. Here are my goals.

personal/family goals

1. join a csa in the spring (it was weird without it this year!)
2. get my house organized
3. go on a date with chad once a month
4. not use credit cards, ever.
5. spend one on one time with Lars and Jette each weekend
6. bake and cook more
7. take pictures every day
8. pay bills on time!
9. seriously job hunt within my company
10. kids: both totally toilet trained & sleeping in own rooms

space oddities goals:
1. get organized/do a better job of keeping records
2. 350 sales on etsy
3. work toward a more cohesive look/branding for my items
4. start a retro babywear line
5. start a men's line of screenprinted clothing

I will mostly likely be adding to this list. But it feels good to start somewhere. Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all the best in 2008!

Front page!

My owls in love onesie made etsy's front page today!

I only wish I could have gotten a full screen shot on my awesome computer monitor at work. But...I am also glad I'm not at work. Ha! Thanks to RunAliceRun for making such a pretty treasury!

boo hoo

I miss my kids a lot today. They are so fun lately. It kills me to be at work instead of at home with them these days. At least I know they are having fun with daddy. I can't wait to get home from work tonight so we can make a gingerbread house or something.

I was just browsing the storque on etsy and thinking about making my way over to blog. I knew what I wanted to write but hadn't totally gathered my thoughts. Then I stumbled across this article about cheating on the handmade pledge. Ha! This totally cracked me up. And here is why...

I love buying handmade. I signed the buy handmade pledge in a second and did buy most of my gifts from local craft shows, on etsy, or just made items myself to give as Christmas gifts for my family and friends. Of course nothing works out perfectly and on Christmas eve a large order of coffee gifts that I ordered kind of late still hadn't been delivered to my house. So on our way out of town on Christmas eve I stopped at Target to get some improvised coffee gifts instead. As I was rushing into Target I ran into my fellow WIST friend Cari from mud and mint. We said our kind of rushed hellos and good-byes and went off in our separate directions (it was Christmas eve!) As I was walking off with my son to find a gift for Grandpa I had to stop and totally laugh at myself when I thought back on the interaction from just a minute before. It went something like this…

Cari: "I just stopped in to get blah blah blah for blah because yadda yada blah…." (I'm putting blahs and yadas because the specific things aren't the important or funny part.)

Me: "Oh I am here because blah blah blah didn't come in the mail so I am picking up blah blah blah for blah."

Am I the only one who in retrospect thinks this is kind of funny? Maybe I am just easily amused? I just love that I subconsciously defended my shopping trip to Target to my crafty friend. Ha! It was so cute and it totally made me smile. I picked out my gifts and felt a little less defeated knowing that I wasn't the only crafty lady out at Target on Christmas eve.

And as far as the handmade pledge goes…yes, I totally cheated. But I did more shopping on etsy and at local boutiques/craft shows that I have in any year previous. So my evaluation:::success!

robot love!

Chad and I decided to make robot shirts for all of our nephews for Christmas. We were planning to have a little get together/gift exchange with my brother/sister in law/kids tonight but still hadn't finished the shirts this morning! By some miracle we were able to get the shirts finished (not heat set! but mom will finish that up, thank goodness!) I think they turned out so cute! The boys loved them and I even printed one for their dad (my brother) and for my son as well. I had a few onesies left in my stash and decided to print those as well. Just three! So those will be added to my etsy shop soon.

Tomorrow I'll be working for part of the day and then we're off to Chicago to celebrate with Chad's family. Happy holidays, everyone!

Check it out! Hellas Kitty got noticed on Merx Latina et Graeca blog - a shopping resource for lovers of Greek and Roman culture. How cool is that!

shopping spree!

Last night I was up until 3:30am shopping on etsy.com. I filled my cart to the brim with gifts for every last person on the list. Yes, I'm a last minute shopper. If half of the gifts arrive before Christmas I'll be happy. But it was so much fun! I only have a few things left to buy or make. Chad is working on a robot design so we can screenprint robot shirts for all of our nephews. That plus a few random food type gifts and I think I'll be square. Yay!

I've been busy packing/shipping out etsy orders and trying to update and list new items in my shop when I can find the time. It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks!

I think we're going to take the kids to see Santa tomorrow. We've been talking about it forever. I would feel so bad for Lars if we just blew it off! Oh and Christmas cookies!! Lars helped me whip up a batch of sour cream sugar cookie dough today but it was too soft so we are leaving it overnight in the fridge. so that will be a fun mommy and kids thing to do tomorrow. Maybe daddy will shovel while mommy bakes. Ha! Love it!

I just set up my table for a holiday sale event at the building I work in. Each person got a 17 foot long table…! Wow! I don't even know what to do with that much space. I started and just used about 1/3 of it, then decided to spread out my cards. I have to say that it looks weird. I think I like my stuff all bunched together. But if I didn't spread it out the table would look totally bare! I am adding my tote bags and shirts to the table tomorrow so hopefully it'll look fantastic by the time I'm done.

So now I just have to hope that some people stop by to shop! If you're in Madison, come on by! The event is called Holiday in the Halls and it is at 525 Junction Rd. (west side near Target) from 10am-4pm. I'll probably only be set up from 10am-1pm, but there are lots of other vendors. Yay!

Star Wars!!

New in my etsy shop this week: Star wars pin sets! Lots of them. I have added almost all of what I have left and then I am hunting for more comics this weekend so hopefully I'll have a fresh batch next week. These sets are one of a kind and are made from images saved from old comic books. They make great gifts - especially stocking stuffers - for any star wars fan. These can also be made into magnets. Awesome! You can see my star wars pins along with other fun comic/sci-fi/superhero pins HERE in my etsy shop!

I can't make myself go to sleep before 2am lately! Seriously, not good. I have to wake up for work before 6am to make it in time. Ugh. Okay. I am going to package up some etsy orders and will myself to SLEEP!

Lady Shirts!

I finally found the time to screen print a batch of lady shirts! I have added our Owls in Love design here in my etsy shop and will soon be adding more designs. All shirts available in a wide array of sizes. I'm also still working on man shirt designs so hopefully you'll see those SOON.

Snow, Shoveling, Screen Printing...

Well, I was stuck in the house most of the weekend. Chad worked on Saturday and the kids and I stayed home and cleaned, played, and watched as the snow covered everything outside very quickly. Then sunday we shoveled for what seemed like forEVER and let the kids play in the snow. It was exhausting and fun!

I spent some time screen printing onesies this weekend. I have some fun new colors available in my etsy shop including olive green, rosy pink and bright blue. Fun stuff for little ones!

Have a great week everyone!

magnets & man shirts

I have a few new brilliant bird magnet sets in my shop this week along with some other new items. I'll be slowly adding inventory as I find time over the next week or so and throughout the rest of the month.

This week I plan to screen print some lady shirts and Chad and I are working on some designs for man shirts. Look for both of those items in my etsy shop in the next couple of weeks!

Ummmmm

The Craftacular is over! It was a great weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out to see me and thanks to Jessi for doing the show with me and just being totally awesome and supportive.

I had the opportunity to appear LIVE on NBC15 on Sunday morning to talk about the Craftacular. I just found the footage and holy crap, my husband wasn't kidding when he said that I said "ummmm" a lot. Ugh. Oh well. If you want to check it out you can click HERE and look in the upper right hand corner. The first segment is Emily Kircher, second is me and then you can see Bobbi from Kittygrrlz and one last segment from Emily. Awesome!

The Capital Times featured an article called "Gifts Outside the Big Box" yesterday. It featured the The High Noon Holiday Craftacular and its organizers (Glitter Workshop and EKRA) and also included lots of comments from local crafters including me. Yay! Check it out The HERE

The above picture is of my husband and I and it was taken by my 3 year old Lars. It's about as enthusiastic as we get lately. It's been a long week! We had a nice Thanksgiving in La Crosse with my family today and got home in time to get a few things done around the house and start heat setting all of the onesies and bibs I screen printed this week. I hope to finish lots more before this weekend!

Craftacular Time!!

The High Noon Holiday Craftacular is this weekend! If you're in the Madison, Wisconsin area, please please come check it out! Featuring 20 awesome vendors and free goody bags for the first 50 early birds on Saturday.

Here are the details
Saturday & Sunday November 24 & 25 from 10am-4pm
at High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington, Madison, WI

I created an etsy treasury to showcase some of the vendors who will be at the show. I think I found every vendor who sells on etsy and ended up adding one of my items in so I didn't duplicate. Look at all of the cool stuff that you can find at the show this weekend! Hope to see you there!

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

The Wisconsin street team trunk show was on Saturday night and it was a really fun event! I loved the mellow feel of the venue and loved meeting some great Wisconsin artists and crafters. Thanks to everyone who came by! I didn't take a single picture...the one here is stolen from Minefull's flickr photostream - thanks Jenn!

My friend Jessi is in the midwest visiting from New Mexico this week. I took her down to The Glitter Workshop and we browsed the shop for as long as my 3 year old could handle. Well, he couldn't handle it very long. But I still managed to find a fantastic hot cocoa candle hand poured into a vintage coffee mug that will be the perfect scent to spruce up my house for the holidays. Jessi found an awesome wallet that I am severely jealous of. And I will be going back for more in the coming weeks for sure - there are SO many great items right now! If you are in the Madison area, please check out this boutique!

I am gearing up for the Craftacular this coming weekend. It should be a great event! I am going to try to screenprint one more batch of onesies and cards this week and possibly make a few picture frames if I can find the right supplies (and the time!) Then I am headed off to La Crosse on Thursday to spend some time with my family for Thanksgiving. It's going to be a crazy week. I can't wait!

Have a great week, everyone!

Some new goodies just in time for the holidays! The journals will be available at the WIST Trunk show this weekend. Very limited supply! And if you are one of the first 50 early birds at the High Noon Craftacular next weekend, you just might get one of these pretty owl-iday cards in your goody bag!

I have had such a busy week and it's not slowing down. I'm picking my dear friend up at O'Hare tomorrow so any last crafting before Saturday's show and cleaning before company arrives will need to be finished tonight. Aaaah! I think I just realized that when I wrote it this very moment. Hello panic mode!

I'm really happy with how these look. So much better than my previous card which was a quickie from vistaprint. I still have some vistaprint cards leftover and I've been using them when I run out of the new ones. Hmmm. Okay, that's all I've got! Have a fantastic Tuesday!

new stuff. do you dig?

I screen printed lots of unicorns and owls over the past couple of weeks. I usually steer away from pink clothing for my daughter, but I just love how this onesie turned out. Deep pink ink on bubblegum pink fabric is kind of cool. I might have to make another in her size!
The Etsy Wisconsin Street Team is having a trunk show this weekend!

What: WIST Holiday Trunk Show
When: Saturday November 17, 5-9pm
Where: Lazy Jane's Café, 1358 Williamson St., Madison, WI

So I feel like we accomplished something! I also met some super nice ladies from the Chicagoland area and even got to spend some time with my in-laws. Yay!

Have a great wekeend everyone!

new cards!

fly away notecard
Originally uploaded by space oddities

Finally, new card sets! I seriously messed with the design on this for hours before I finally decided on this simple classic looking card. I'll be offering these in sets and although they could be used for any occasion and are blank, I think these have a holiday feel to them. For the first time I am also going to offer to add a custom message in these cards. So if someone is looking for holiday card sets and just needs a "happy holidays" or any other greeting added inside or out, they've got it.

More cards coming soon. I'm also working on some fun Christmas ornaments tonight. It's a total experiment so I have no idea if it'll pan out.

Okay, off to craft!

BRILLIANT BIRDS Magnet Set
Originally uploaded by space oddities

I am planning to make several more sets of these in different color combos and also plan to stamp these beautiful bird images onto delicate tissue paper to use to decoupage picture frames.

I have a couple of holiday shows coming up and have a lot of work to do before I will feel prepared! My husband and I are planning to make some holiday card sets with the gocco, I want to make at least a dozen picture frames, plus lots of other goodies. About now is when I had better get really organized, do my supply shopping, and then craft full force!

Hopefully I'll have a few new things to share after the weekend!

I'm getting my 3 year old a REAL camera for Christmas. Taking pictures is all he wants to do! I think this is fantastic but I have to be RIGHT next to him when he is using my expensive digital and it just makes me super nervous. Oh, plus I miss all of the good shots I want to capture because he has the camera! I let him use the holga the other day so I'm excited to see how those turn out. Here are some shots of him playing with grandma's camera this weekend. Cute.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

I haven't been very motivated to make new things lately. I have a lot of ideas but have just been exhausted between my full time job, kids, keeping up my home...just usual life stuff. I did make a small batch of pins including this astronaut set this week. I also posted a few random new items in my etsy shop and will post more throughout the week.

Tonight I spent some time cutting some super awesome images from a wacky 1950s book about 101 ways teenagers make money. Ha! I plan to do some supply shopping and thrifting later this week so that I can get moving with some new projects. Sometimes just doing a little supply shopping is all it takes to inspire me.

Have a fantastic week, everyone!

A call out for etsy trading!

There is a chill in the air. The holiday season is soon approaching…which means the holiday shopping frenzy will be upon us soon. Okay, I know it's a little early but hey, 10 weeks to Christmas, right? Before you know it it'll be 2 weeks and you'll be scrabmling to find the perfect gift. And no doubt so will I!

I am planning to make or buy handmade gifts for the holidays this year and I am hoping lots of you are planning to do the same. If anyone has items they are interested in trading in their etsy shop please let me know! You can take a look at my shop HERE to see if there's something you might be looking for. I admit that my shop is a little bare right now, but I'll be adding more in the coming weeks and am also happy to do custom orders.

Check me out. I'll check you out. It'll be grand. Just convo me or post here or whatevs.

Old friends, good times

Yesterday I had the pleasure of having coffee with an old friend who I hadn't seen in more than 10 years. It was so nice to catch up with him and reflect on how much things have changed yet how much things have stayed the same over that time. I was initially embarassed to let him into my messy trainwreck of a home (this was an impromptu visit!) but of course I'm glad I did. Real friends don’t care if your house is upside down. Isn't it fantastic? Thanks for going out of your way to see me, Josh. I hope your trek back to home is a good one!

Life is good. Here's to old friends and good coffee!

geeks rule.

Geek-kon is over! Thanks to everyone involved for making it a great event. This was my first time vending at a con and although the location was a little challenging, the fantastic staff and volunteers along with the super nice con attendees made the weekend most awesome. Oh! And I got to meet some supernice people in the vendor room including the ladies from Paw Star, the awesome couple that is Cheap Books by Phil, and my friendly booth neighbor from Screaming Bee.

I felt a little out of my element at first but by the end of the first day I was starting to think that doing more events like these might be right up my alley. The con-goers really seemed to dig my comic book pins and magnets and looooved my husband's designs...especially HELLAS KITTY, which I'll post a picture of soon.

I was invited to do a couple of upcoming cons and I am definitely going to check them out. I think this would be a great venue for my husband and I to collaborate our work. We have to talk more but I think we've decided to make Space Oddities our one big colloborative business instead of having separate things and separate shops. I just think this makes more sense and would be easier.

Oh! One more thing. Geek-kon made CNN on Saturday night! This was all the buzz on late Saturday and most of Sunday at the con. SO exciting for all involved. Apparently the attendance was way more gigantic than was expected and everyone was impressed with this for a first year convention. I guess we can count on a 2nd year!

I like unicorns.

Do you? I really like the way these note cards turned out. I used metallic silver ink on black and pink cardstock. I am almost considering packaging the sets along with a silver gel pen but that might be a little too cheesy. Or maybe just cheesy enough.

Hmmm. Okay that's all I've got for today. Enjoy the leaves crunching under your feet.

jetsons, jedi, etc.

I have just a bit of some original 1980s empire strikes back gift wrap left and decided to use it to make some cards last night. I love how they turned out and plan to make more with whatever scraps I have left. I'm trying to figure out where I can score some more paper like this…I really want the real deal and nothing NEW. I will be on a hunt for this, especially since my husband wanted to use the first batch we had to decoupage something for our son!

I also made some fun cards with some Jetsons candy ad pictures saved from a damaged book. They are bright and cheery and perfect for any occasion. I especially love Rosie and her lightbulb birthday cake. Wouldn't it make a perfect birthday card?

I'll be bringing this stuff along with a lot more geekery along with me to geek-kon in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend. This will not only be my first time vending at a con, it will be my first time attending one. I can't wait to check it out!

1. I went to Panera three times TODAY. Once for breakfast, once for lunch, once for an afternoon coffee break. This is an obscene and expensive addiction.

2. I won my school spelling bee in 7th grade - but did not get any further than the city spelling bee. The word I effed up? Sabotage. Ironic? Yes.

3. I have a Nike-checkmark-shaped scar on my right hand that is the result of a fight my brother and I had on an airplane when we were kids.

4. I am considering moving to San Antonio in the spring. I have never ever been there before.

5. I love scrabble and boggle and any other word games. I love you if you will play them with me.

6. When I was pregnant with my son I craved mashed potatoes and orange soda constantly.

Okay now it's my turn to tag six people. And I'm off to do that now!

Handmade for the Holidays!

Space Oddities and Applepanda will be bringing lots of crafty goodness to the 3rd Annual Holiday Craftacular in Madison, Wisconsin this winter! The craftacular is on November 24 & 25 - just in time for your Thanksgiving weekend shopping frenzy - and will be held at the High Noon Saloon.

My dear friend Jessi is flying in from New Mexico that weekend and we will be sharing a booth at this event. That's where Applepanda comes in! Originally Applepanda was Jessi and I collaborating our work to make greeting cards with fun removable felt gifts. Since both of our lives are so wild and busy lately (and because we live super far away from each other) we have not have much success collaborating recently. But Jessi has some great ideas for fun gifts and felty awesomeness for the show and plans to continue adding items into etsy shop going forward.

It's going to be the best craftacular yet! If you live in the Madison area please come check it out. Click on the flyer above for details and be sure to check Glitter Workshop's Website for a list of vendors in the coming weeks.
